Meteorites are a surprisingly topical subject: In the first half of 2026, an above-average number of sightings were reported – a surge whose cause remains unexplained to this day. What is indisputable, however, is that these visitors from outer space have accompanied us since time immemorial. Throughout history, diverse cultures have observed, interpreted, and recounted their appearance in a myriad of ways.

Under the guidance of comic artist Sascha Hommer, students from the Illustration/Comics department at the University of Art Kassel spent two semesters engaging intensively with the book “A Brief History of Meteorite Falls” – a volume in which artist Regine Petersen has compiled accounts of meteorite discoveries ranging from long before the Common Era right up to the present day.

The artistic perspectives presented in this publication are just as multifaceted as these historical accounts themselves. The volume shines a spotlight on a new generation of young illustrators from Kassel, bringing together an impressive array of styles and narrative approaches.
