IN WINTER

It is winter and in a nameless forest in the north, the paths of a cat and a hawk cross. This brief encounter will be fateful for both, as death, who roams silently through the cold night, joins them. “In Winter“ is reminiscent of a classic animal fable, but instead of a moral mediation, the atmospheric tale focuses on the inner lives of the characters and their inevitable relationship.

LANGFINGER & WACKELZAHN

In verses and colorful illustrations Julia Kluge goes on a hunt for centuries-old hunting customs. The close connection of hunting with the development of culture and art goes back to the Paleolithic cave paintings, and since then each epoch had found its own depiction of hunting between necessary food acquisition, mystic ritual, and brutal pastime.

From the medieval times to the 18th century hunting in Central Europe was reserved for the nobility. This power centering culminated in elaborate hate or par force hunts, which were a popular social event at the princely courts. Anyone who wanted to apply something had to prove his sovereignty as a good hunter. This epoch’s excellently decorated hunting books provide the tips, tricks and the technique of the hunting in skurrily beautiful manner. Many a prince wrote his own hunting book in which he praised his abilities into the skies.

In remembrance of these historical hunting books, Julia Kluge drew her own “wise guide”. Her illustrations open a view on a cultural heritage hidden in the undergrowth. The ink drawing’s fine structures are reminiscent of light, which falls through the thick tree tops on the forest floor. Crisp verses attack the once secret language of the huntsmen. The result is a book to be enjoyed with a wink that reflects the ambivalent relationship between the proud self-image of the hunters and the hunted animals.

Nika, Lotte, Mangold!

Nika is into metal, video games, and action. Lotte is super athletic, super accurate, and super smart. Mangold likes to drag around stuff, has the best taste in clothes, and makes the best cannonballs. The three dwell in Dackeltal, where Karl dates nasty Berta, Becker’s fat cat feels misunderstood, a new tree house is built, and wild snowball battles take place in winter.

Sometimes silly, sometimes thoughtful and always with lots of humor, all sorts of ideas, and full of beans the three friends NIKA, LOTTE and MANGOLD face the bigger and the smaller adventures in their lives. And Thomas Wellmann proves once again that he is not only a fantastic comic artist, but also what great narrator he is.
This is the English edition of Nika, Lotte, Mangold!, that will be released simultaneously in the Uk in co-operation with Blank Slate Books. You can find the German edition here.

Lichtpause

LICHTPAUSE tells a day in Algiers, from the early morning to the night, and takes us on a long walk through the city. The voice of the narrator mixes with the voices of her friends who comment, interpret, ask, answer. It is about the air, the traffic, the sea, the presence of violence, the money, the oil, the layers of the past that are deposited in the architecture. About the view of the Europeans on Algiers and about the possibility of friendship, despite the echoes of the history and the current situation.

The book was created during two stays of the artist in Algiers, between September 2016 and April 2017. The work on the text and drawings was mainly an occasion to listen, to observe, to find a look that is searching and does not necessarily mean to understand. A perspective that is constantly questioning itself, that devoted itself to volatility and tries to grasp situations that pass by and still remain as erring memories. The result is an impressive travel report in fragments, in poetic snapshots of constantly changing perspective angles.
