Trixi is a twinkly and (sometimes a bit) fickle moth, or -more precisely- a hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) whom people often take for a true feathered hummingbird. Swift like a spring breeze, she flies and races around with her best friend, Siggi the butterfly, and as they flutter whimsically through the town, they stop here & there to enjoy their favorite nectar out of the lilacs. But always getting mistaken for a hummingbird makes her miserable: as soon as people realize she is no bird but a big moth, they turn away from her in disgust. Why can’t she be so elegant, so focused, so beautiful and so widely beloved as a hummingbird?
When Siggi gets stuck on a lollipop and then kidnapped, there’s no turning back! To save her best friend, Trixi needs to get over her insecurities and believe in herself. Maybe staying true to who she is won’t be so bad after all, who knows? She often takes one eye out of the ball, it’s true, but she is also clever, brave and creative.
This colourful comic doesn’t just tell an exciting story, but it also encourages children to take pride on what makes them unique and to support each other. On the way, it seizes the occasion to highlight how insects aren’t “disgusting” at all but beautifully diverse and deserving of a place in our world.
