BETTER CALL MEERSCHWEINCHEN

Welcome to an unusual – and somewhat peculiar – shared household, where everything goes a little awry, yet feels exactly right all at the same time. Living here are: A reclusive guinea pig who rarely ventures out of its room – and, when it does, offers enigmatic advice. A timid, melancholy skunk that prefers nothing more than to burrow deep inside its beanbag chair. And a good-natured bloodhound, steadfastly dedicated to lifting everyone’s spirits.

Amidst phone calls, minor mishaps, and quiet moments, Katharina Kulenkampff uses humorous dialogue, delicate linework, and vibrant colors to tell the story of her animal protagonists’ life together: A little absurd, a little sad, and a little weird.

DIE NATÜRLICHE KOMÖDIE

The autumn wind sweeps up the birch leaf, Birk – yet instead of rising with the other leaves on the breeze to witness the fabled Autumn Festival, Birk drifts down to the forest floor. In search of the next gust of wind – and constantly battling against the approaching end of his life – Birk encounters Candy, a mushroom who has just gone through a breakup, and the ancient, rugged Mother Nature. On their shared journey through the forest, they encounter a wellness cult led by a kombucha mushroom; a patriotic slime mold uncompromisingly carving its way through solid rock; as well as many other forest creatures who, in the face of human-caused environmental destruction, must adapt to their new habitat.

In the characters’ encounters, various ideologies collide: Birk swears by unwavering positivity and self-acceptance; an oyster mushroom is deeply unsettled by its own transience; the trees refuse to engage in any discourse or change whatsoever; and Candy – cynical and hyper-correct – claims to want to improve the world, yet secretly always acts solely for his own benefit.

“Die Natürliche Komödie” (The Natural Comedy) is a visually stunning graphic novel that skillfully transforms Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy” into an adventurous journey through a Finnish forest populated by anthropomorphic plants and ecological undertones. The result is a biting and hilarious satire of a society in which nature is subordinated to the human pursuit of profit. Through her multilayered narrative style, author Ulla Donner ironically touches upon themes such as self-optimization, toxic “self-care” culture, xenophobia, dating rituals, and society’s fear of aging.

DAS BUCH VON DEN FÜNF SINNEN

Lucie Lučanská invites us to explore our perception of the world. Across five chapters—each featuring its own distinct visual language—the very same walk is presented from a variety of perspectives. Let us begin with sight: colors glow, merge, and harmonize with the landscape. Next comes hearing, for the book itself is brimming with sounds—and every single sound, whether read aloud or imagined, becomes audible. Pure magic! Then comes the sense of smell: the scents we associate with our surroundings whisk us away to other worlds. To engage the sense of touch, a special varnish highlights specific details within the illustrations, inviting us to explore our surroundings with our hands. And the final chapter—dedicated to the sense of taste—is truly mouth-watering! The walk concludes with a return home, where the day’s adventures are shared over dinner.

“Das Buch von den fünf Sinnen” (The Book of the Five Senses) serves as both a narrative and a graphic invitation to discover the world—and our own perceptions of it—while simultaneously demonstrating just how widely these perceptions can vary from person to person. The use of spot colors and carefully selected varnishes complements these diverse sensory impressions, transforming the book into a truly unique tactile and visual experience—and one to be enjoyed by adults and children alike.

WESTNORDWEST

What would the soundtrack of cities like Seattle, Salt Lake City, Portland, or Vancouver sound like? What might one encounter at the filming locations of “TwinPeaks”? How much time can one spend in a bookstore – and why would someone in the U.S. Northwest be thinking of the Czech city of Znojmo? “Westnordwest” (Westnorthwest) recounts the experiences of a grand journey across North America: from Washington State, through British Columbia, to Oregon, and back again to Washington. The result is an original and visually lavish travelogue in which author and comic artist Jindřich Janíček gives free rein to his fascination with North American geography, folklore, and pop culture. Impressions that defy easy verbal description are captured with a sense of wonder and enthusiasm, all while being infused with a pervasive self-irony.

Within these striking colored-pencil drawings, we discover major cities and skyscrapers, roadside motels, run-down gas stations and food stands, cafés, antique bookshops, and ordinary neighborhoods – places one would never find in a standard guidebook. But we also encounter vast forests, lakes and waterfalls, mountain ranges, and volcanoes. And truly ancient, imposing bridges. Humorous comic-strip sequences interweave with illustrated prose, enriched by encyclopedic curiosities, sketches, maps, and diagrams.

Spanning over three hundred pages, this book is a blend of visual and written travel diary – serving simultaneously as a personal confession and a political commentary.

METEORITE FALLS

Meteorites are a surprisingly topical subject: In the first half of 2026, an above-average number of sightings were reported – a surge whose cause remains unexplained to this day. What is indisputable, however, is that these visitors from outer space have accompanied us since time immemorial. Throughout history, diverse cultures have observed, interpreted, and recounted their appearance in a myriad of ways.

Under the guidance of comic artist Sascha Hommer, students from the Illustration/Comics department at the University of Art Kassel spent two semesters engaging intensively with the book “A Brief History of Meteorite Falls” – a volume in which artist Regine Petersen has compiled accounts of meteorite discoveries ranging from long before the Common Era right up to the present day.

The artistic perspectives presented in this publication are just as multifaceted as these historical accounts themselves. The volume shines a spotlight on a new generation of young illustrators from Kassel, bringing together an impressive array of styles and narrative approaches.

With contributions by: Emlyn Schüller, Meret Baudler, Jule Werner, Jungyun Jessica Seo, Vy Bui, Anke Wellmeier, Yelda Mattheus, Rosali Karré, Yue Guan, Alina Winter, Anso Bonne, Theodor Rust, and Edda Rumpel.

LANGER ATEM

In her intimate debut into comics, Jeong-in Mun tells the story of her family’s past through the eyes of three generations of women. In the center of the narrative stands her grandmother Chunja. With delicate black and white drawings, Jeong-in Mun recounts her grandmother’s life with the ocean and her mother’s upbringing.

“Long Breath” shows the effects of the family history on her own life as a young woman split between cultures and continents in a skillful interweaving of different times & perspectives. The result is a touching story about life’s hardships, the beauty & perils of the ocean, and the female bonds that echo through generations.

Haenyeo (literally “women of the sea”) are female scuba divers who develop impressive habilities to swim underwater without oxygen tanks. In South Korea, the roots of this profession date back centuries. A moving family story that combines south-korean traditions & cultural identity.

TRIXI – ES FLATTERT IM FLIEDER

Trixi is a twinkly and (sometimes a bit) fickle moth, or -more precisely- a hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) whom people often take for a true feathered hummingbird. Swift like a spring breeze, she flies and races around with her best friend, Siggi the butterfly, and as they flutter whimsically through the town, they stop here & there to enjoy their favorite nectar out of the lilacs. But always getting mistaken for a hummingbird makes her miserable: as soon as people realize she is no bird but a big moth, they turn away from her in disgust. Why can’t she be so elegant, so focused, so beautiful and so widely beloved as a hummingbird?

When Siggi gets stuck on a lollipop and then kidnapped, there’s no turning back! To save her best friend, Trixi needs to get over her insecurities and believe in herself. Maybe staying true to who she is won’t be so bad after all, who knows? She often takes one eye out of the ball, it’s true, but she is also clever, brave and creative.

This colourful comic doesn’t just tell an exciting story, but it also encourages children to take pride on what makes them unique and to support each other. On the way, it seizes the occasion to highlight how insects aren’t “disgusting” at all but beautifully diverse and deserving of a place in our world.

Pascaline’s parents are having an argument: should they rather boil or fry crickets for dinner? The little bat loves both her parents so much she wishes she could just agree with the two of them. In the third book starring the little bat Pascaline, Beatrice Alemagna tells a story about loyalty conflicts and tackles the big question: is it possible to love without choosing sides? The result is a successful new dive into the emotional world of children by the multitalented picture book creator.

DIE GRILLE IN DER GEIGE

One summer, a wandering cricket finds an old violin in the woods. “How convenient!”, she exclaims and promptly uses the spacious instrument as her new home. At nighttime, she plays the violin’s strings with her arms and legs which delights all small animals around, even the moths in the pumpkin-bar. As the year comes to an end however, a bitter-cold winter begins that will put the cricket’s music and the solidarity of the wood-dwellers to a hard test.

Anna Haifisch’s first picture book for children enchants readers with its charming critters and lovingly quirky humor. As a tongue-in-cheek reference to classic fables, Anna Haifisch tells a story about the appreciation for art and the importance of solidarity in difficult times, again proving her talent as an exceptional artist and storyteller.
